When you hear of Playa Grande the first thing that comes to mind for many is the nesting ground of the Baula Turtles.   The Baulas National Park was established in Playa Grande in 1990 and includes the 3.6 km long beach stretch of Playa Grande.

The presence of the Baula Leatherback Turtles have also brought controversy to Playa Grande as the National Park is in direct conflict with local real estate developers that wanted to turn the area into a high density real estate project.  The Leatherback trust has been the driving force in protecting the Leatherback Turtles in the area.   http://www.leatherback.org   The turtle season runs from October to May.

The Park was established by Presidential decree in 1990 and formalized in law in July, 1995. It is made up of three nesting beaches, Playa Grande which is 3.6 km long, Playa Langosta which is 1.3 km long, and Playa Ventanas which is 1.0 km long. It also protects two mangrove estuaries, Estero de Tamarindo, the largest mangrove estuary in Central Ame

Before most people even knew where Costa Rica was located Nosara Beach in Guancaste had already become a magnet for foreigners looking for the surf and beach life that Costa Rica has to offer.   Nosara was one of the first planned beach communities in Costa Rica which began in the 1970′s.   It began as a dream of a North American who purchased 2,700 acres of land and designed a master development plan for the area to include building lots, nature preserve, commercial area and all of which now makes up the center of Nosara and which the locals have called “proyecto americano”

Nosara was at the forefront of community based organization when it formed the Nosara Civic Association in 1975 whose main goal has been to “to preserve the natural environment within planned and controlled growth; and to maintain the quality of life and to enhance the community in which we live by providing information, support and value to its members and its neighbors”

The ability of the community to preserve the environment and control growth has made Nosara a very appealing area to live and as a result their is a vibrant international community that lives here full time.

Just around the corner from the famous beaches of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa is the fishing village of Manzanillo.   The drive out from Santa Teresa by way of a scenic dirt road that wraps around the ocean front is worth the adventure.  As real estate prices rose in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa foreign buyers and developers set their sights on Manzanillo.    The village was spared of the development that ocurred to its neighbors of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa because of one major factor – the lack of potable water.   The lack of potable water resulted in the denial of construction permits and hence the slow development of the area.
